We all need to communicate effectively, yet few of us spend time on it! This course builds a variety of key skills around communication and active listening and explores ways to emphasise leadership and communication traits in a variety of situations.

Course Description

As sports people we use communication to: 
relate to others… socially connect… greet… call attention… share feelings… express an opinion… agree… disagree… explain… share information… question… answer… tease… bargain… negotiate… argue… captain… manipulate… compliment… comment… protest… complain… describe… encourage… coach… instruct… provide feedback… show humor… discuss interests… be polite… make friends… express interest…

This course provides participants with a variety of key skills around communication and active listening as well as ways to emphasise leadership traits in a variety of situations. Topics include:

  • effective communication;
  • active listening and communication styles;
  • social media and communication; and
  • meetings, presentations and reports.

 

Each topic contains a range of materials that are written, interactive and include video and online links as well as a selection of practical readings and ongoing knowledge checks. In addition to generic materials, within each unit you will also see two specific sections:

These sections encourage you stop for a minute and think. You will be asked to consider and apply existing or new knowledge to your individual situation.

This course is a stand alone, individual course but may also be undertaken as the third module of the Institute of Sport’s Leadership and Resilience Development Program.
